Kardinia’s history

Kardinia, at 11 Victoria Street, Stanton Hill, is a distinguished 1880s residence built by artist and surveyor Edward Bevan. The home was expanded by John Graham Macdonald, Police Magistrate and Gold Commissioner, reflecting its growing civic stature.

From 1896 to 1908, Kardinia held national significance as the site of Australia’s first Japanese Consulate, anchoring early diplomatic and cultural ties between Japan and North Queensland. Later, it became the home of journalist David Green and the Green sisters—renowned spinsters and socialites—who established Kardinia as a vibrant social and literary centre. In 1984, Paul and June Tonnoir began a meticulous 40-year restoration, preserving its architectural integrity and rich history.

Today, Kardinia endures as a rare cultural landmark, embodying Townsville’s artistic, civic and international heritage.
